Either way, you should talk with a vet about the diet of the dog, so you’re sure that the puppy gets the proper food for his breed and age.

Basically there are two different types of dog diarrhea and they both sound bad. These are acute and chronic. Acute is the type we are all familiar with. It just suddenly comes on but is only temporary. With acute diarrhea your dog will have soft or watery stools, minor stomach discomfort, and frequent bowel movements. Chronic is when the diarrhea is ongoing, maybe even with normal stools in between the bouts of diarrhea. This kind can last for days and will have blood or mucus in the stools and be explosive watery. Your dog may strain when trying to go. Your dog acts sick or lethargic.
Dietary Changes. This is especially a problem with young puppies. You are required to find out what your puppy was on before you brought him in and what is best for him. It is necessary to always make gradual transition from any old diet to a new one. Make sure you handle this well to avoid intolerance in your dog.
If you want to try some things at home, a few things that have been successful are caster oil, a diet of plain rice, or thickened milk with arrowroot. If any of these seem to do the trick, slowly get them back on their regular food by mixing the two together for a couple days. If the diarrhea continues, certainly it is time to visit your vet.
