We all know the secret of how to get in shape: eat less and move more. Are people who have high physical fitness and frequently workout naturally inclined to do so, or is it a habit that can be learned?
Whenever I have to get more inspired, nothing beats taking a rather long walk outside the house. When I am worried, angry, or discouraged a walk normally centers me. I enjoy just to walk on the beach considering that the vast light blue ocean and the miles of open sand before me, decrease the enormity of my difficulties.
In essence, going for a walk allows me to take a “time out” from life’s activities. It is that mental clear-headedness that makes walking such an efficient way to be more motivated.Taking a walk is so basic and yet very few people do it. It’s not necessary to wear athletic shoes, or walk fast, or carry weights in order to reap benefits. You will discover something powerful about taking time for yourself, to be all alone in nature, without any distractions. It is energizing, uplifting, and a sure-fire way of getting more motivated.
Walking is one of the few times I am able to have solitude in my life (aside from the bathroom). I get to empty my mind and reconnect with nature. It is one of the few ways in which I get to move my legs for an extended length of time. Walking strengthens my body and my mind.
It is best to walk outside instead of walking in a gym. No exercise equipment, TV, stale A/C, music, or crying kids. Walking outside lets you truly focus on yourself and your thoughts, without having distractions. It is possible to hear yourself think. You breathe more deeply and your heart pumps a bit faster, invigorating your brain and body. Your blood flows faster through your body, stimulating you. Your thinking becomes clear.
There is vitality in clarity. It frees up your mind to give thought to new things. And, in that minute, I usually have sensational insights and realizations. In the blink of an eye, I can think of the solution to a complex situation that’s been weighing on me. I practically feel lighter. As soon as you clear your mind, it is a lot easier to solve your problems. This is a heady and magical state to be in. It is really very cool to realize that you are capable of solving your own problems. Again, you are in control of the path of your life. It is a great and liberating way to view your life.
Just take a few minutes to imagine what your life would be like if you took a walk every day. Close your eyes and think about how your future outlook would change, how your opinion of yourself and what you think you are capable of would change.
You have gained clarity, solved problems, increased bloodflow, and reduced your stress. All of that from the simple act of taking a walk. Pretty great, isn’t it?
